Caps Cases was founded in 1982 by Charlie Bissett and Peter Bush. Trading out of a 5000 square foot factory in Newmarket with just six employees the company was able to compete in the recession of the early 80’s. From the beginning the company set out to enter niche markets in packaging including assembled divisions and pallet containers. This policy has continued over the years with the company also specialising in 6 point gluing, high quality print and the development of the patented “Klikstor” archive storage box.

In 1995 the company opened a factory in Baillieston, Glasgow primarily to supply assembled divisions to the whisky industry. This factory is able to supply both corrugated and solidboard “Eurolok” divisions. The factories at Newmarket and Baillieston are fully integrated and all sales, purchasing and accounts functions are based in Newmarket.

In 2011 Caps Cases acquired another manufacturer, Croftbench who operate out of a 10,000 square foot factory in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. Croftbench has a comprehensive list of manufacturing plant and equipment including a 2.8 Metre printer/slotter purchased in 2004, a Sodeme 2-piece stitcher less than seven years old, a Sodeme 1-piece stitcher, various platen presses and a cad-cam sample maker.

In 2012 group turnover exceeded £18 million and Caps Cases now employs over 220 staff. It is testimony to the loyalty of the company’s employees that much of our workforce has been at Caps for over 15 years, for many we were their first employment. Of the 6 people who started in 1982, 4 are still with us!

Many people ask where the name came from. The founders and their wives…
Charlie, Angela, Pete and Sue – CAPS. Looking forward, we continue to develop innovative and exciting new ideas in partnership with our customers. We continue to invest in new machinery and processes. We have introduced lean management techniques into our factories and we have taken on the challenges of new technologies and use them for the benefit of ourselves and our customers.

Caps Cases Ltd recognises the social and economic importance of protecting the Environment and is fully committed to complying with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the EU Regulation 995/2010.

Both our Newmarket and Baillieston sites have achieved ISO 14001 accreditation. This standard involves the management and control of our waste to ensure that our staff, the public and the general environment are not damaged. It also demonstrates our commitment to producing environmentally friendly products which are 100% recyclable. The management of ISO14001 runs alongside our existing ISO9001 Quality Assurance systems.

On 21st March 2013 we had an Environmental and Energy Audit which presented the company’s annual carbon footprint and provided an action plan to identify priority measures to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions.

We are a member of Sedex Global, which is an Ethical Data Exchange dedicated to driving improvements in responsible and ethical business practices in global supply chains.

As a member of Sedex Global we are able to share ethical information about our company with our customers. This includes our assessment questionnaire, audit reports and certifications.

We are also able to use Sedex Global to help us evaluate our suppliers’ ethical code of practice.

Our Newmarket and Baillieston sites are certified to the BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials: Basic Hygiene Category. We first attained certification to the standard in 2011 at Newmarket, and in 2015 at Baillieston. In our 2019 audits both sites achieved ‘AA’ grades.

Our senior management demonstrate a full commitment to the standard, and continually identify and implement any opportunities for improvement that arise, as part of our company wide continuous improvement ethos.

Our Newmarket and Baillieston sites are also ISO9001 certified, and this certification underpins our commitment to producing high quality products.

Caps Cases Ltd is committed to producing an extensive range of premium packaging at cost effective prices for both the food non-food marketplace. We manufacture an extensive range of plain and printed corrugated cardboard packaging for a wide array of market sectors. Our packaging is precisely designed while meeting the specialised regulations of the BRCGS standards for Packaging Materials and ISO 9001:2015

It is the policy of the company and the company’s responsibility to its customers to only supply products that are safe and legally compliant. Senior Management is committed to continually improving the BRCGS and ISO 9001:2015 requirements and systems in place at the site through regular reviews and the provision of adequate resources both human and financial.

Hazards within the entire process including storage, production and distribution have been assessed as part of a formal Hazard & Risk Management programme utilising risk assessment principles. Identified hazards have been either eliminated or reduced to a minimum.

Integration of a Hygiene Code of Practice within the Product Safety and Quality Management system ensures that the implementation and monitoring of the required standards are achieved.

    Scope of Management System

The scope of the management system is defined as the following for our Newmarket site:

    • “Flexographic/digital printing, die cutting, folding/gluing and stitching/taping of corrugated board to form cases, lids, trays, pallet boxes, dividers and POS display units for secondary contact food and consumer goods use. Outsourced gluing and silk screen/lithographic laminate printing”

The scope of the management system is defined as the following for our Baillieston site:

    • “The die cutting, gluing, slotting and flexographic printing of corrugated fibreboard and solid fibreboard as printed and plain cases, divisions and POS displays for secondary contact”

The Newmarket site currently holds certifications to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and BRCGS for Packaging Materials.

The Newmarket site also operates as Nut Safe. In keeping with the requirements of some of our customers we have implemented controls to assure our customers that we endeavour to be as free as possible from Nut allergens. Although, through allergen testing levels of nut protein can be detected to very small amount, they are not however finite tests. It would be impossible for us to test every product manufactured. We are confident that the controls we have in place enable our customers to use our products to package their products to be eaten safely by Nut allergy sufferers.

The Baillieston site currently holds the IS0 9001:2015 accreditation and BRCGS for Packaging Materials. There are plans to extend our IS0 14001 certification to the Baillieston site in the coming years. In 2020 the sites were assessed against 2015 versions of the ISO standards, and BRCGS for Packaging Materials. We have made the decision to keep with announced BRCGS audits.

We have always run on a professional and quality conscious basis, we have designed our system as a means of enhancing this. Certification to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 is viewed by us as confirmation of our belief that we offer the excellent customer service and technical skills demanded in today’s marketplace while maintaining environmental integrity.

Our FSC certification allows us to offer sustainably sourced material to our clients.

We believe that registration to BRCGS at Newmarket and Baillieston adds the final link in our certification
chain and provides the additional controls of a formal management system to sound GMP and hygiene principles.

We do not exclude any of the requirements of either ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 from a management system on the basis of lack of applicability but our approach to clause 7.1.5 requires clarification. We use tape measures for general measurement, and these are checked for damage and clarity during the audit process and Dial or digital callipers for thickness checking of board. These are marked for indication only and do not require calibration due to the accuracy requirements.
